Mirjan FortBuilt during the 16th century, and about 22km from Gokarna, this relic of an ancient time was the location for various battles, and today lies in ruins due to the passage of time. Yana CavesLocated approximately twenty five kilometers from the small coastal town of Kumta, the Yana caves are the central feature in the thriving evergreen forests of the Sahyadri Mountains. The limestone domed caves are a favourite with wildlife enthusiasts and avid rock climbers, who are drawn to this area throughout the year. To get to this magnificent natural wonder, visitors have to walk several miles on a semi-paved path just off the highway. However, the beauty of this area is enough to keep one occupied during this trek. With majestic mountains, a wide variety of rock formations, magical waterfalls and even a holy temple to see, it would be very hard not to enjoy yourself. Another option for visitors to this area includes hiking up to the popular Vibhuti Falls and camping over night in the surrounding wilderness, enjoying nature in its purest form. The tallest peak here is known as Bhariraveswara Shikhara, which stands at 120 Meters, while the shorter Mohini Shikhara is at 90 meters from the base. Also visible are the beautiful black crystalline limestone features, which have over the years been exposed to the elements and are now carved into various shapes and sizes. Also visible from here are the large number of bee hives that are attached to the rock shelters. The Yana caves are a must visit for all who visit Gokarna. |

Murudeshwar TempleMurudeshwar temple is Shiva temple, this sacred place presents some beautiful carvings and statues, which has a history that dates back to a few centuries (Threthayuga). The temple which embodies a Shiva Linga is believed to have erupted when Ravana (Demon King of Lanka) flung the cloth covering the Atmalinga at Gokarna while lifting it. Mangaluru literally means the city of Mangala According to legend Matsyendranatha, one of the important propounders of the Nath cult had arrived at Mangalore with the princess of Kerala, Premaladevi. He named her Mangaladevi. It is believed that they could not proceed further as Mangaladevi died after a brief period of illness and a temple was consecrated in her name at Bolar. Later the Mangaladevi was renovated by the Alupa king Kundavarma in 968 AD. |
