As a small town in India, Gokarna is full of contrasts where it gives its visitors the better of two worlds. It allows one to peak into its history as a small temple town dedicated mainly to the worship of the Hindu deity, Lord Mahabaleshwara. On the other hand its pristine beaches and panoramic shorelines allow vacationers to enjoy uninterrupted sunlight, where one can soak in the warmth and enjoy their stay.
Locally it is believed that the name Gokarna derives its name from a legend in which Lord Shiva emerged from the ear of a cow. Literally meaning ‘cow’s ear’, this village is formed by the ear shaped confluence of two rivers. With its narrow streets, traditional houses and plethora of temples, Gokarna is truly a favourite with the pilgrims, scholars and beach buffs alike. Combine this with the wonderful scenic drive to this quaint little town, where the rocky Ghats meet you on one side and the expansive Arabian Sea on the other and one can see why Gokarna is fast becoming a popular vacation spot.
